It stars Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Irvine and Peter Fonda, in his final film role. The film tells the story of William H. Pitsenbarger, a United States Air Force Pararescueman who flew rescue missions during the Vietnam War to aid downed soldiers and pilots, and the 34 year quest to have him awarded the Medal of Honor. Pitsenbarger was killed in the Battle of Xa Cam My aiding and defending a unit of soldiers pinned down by an enemy assault. Before his death he helped save over 60 men in the battle. 3] The film premiered in a special screening for veterans in Westhampton Beach, New York. It is scheduled to be released theatrically on January 24, 2020, by Roadside Attractions. The film's title is taken from Abraham Lincoln 's Gettysburg Address, where Lincoln honors the fallen, to which they "gave the last full measure of devotion. 5] Plot [ edit] This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. August 2019) The true story of Vietnam War hero William H. Pitsenbarger ( Jeremy Irvine) a U. S. Air Force Pararescuemen (also known as a PJ) who personally saved over sixty men. During a rescue mission on April 11, 1966, he was offered the chance to escape on the last helicopter out of a combat zone heavily under fire, but he stayed behind to save and defend the lives of soldiers of the U. Army's 1st Infantry Division, before making the ultimate sacrifice in one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Thirty-two years later, Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman ( Sebastian Stan) on a career fast-track is tasked with investigating a Medal of Honor request for Pitsenbarger made by his best friend and PJ partner on the mission ( William Hurt) and his parents ( Christopher Plummer & Diane Ladd. Huffman seeks out the testimony of Army veterans who witnessed Pitsenbargers extraordinary valor, including Takoda ( Samuel L. Jackson) Burr ( Peter Fonda) and Mott ( Ed Harris. But as Huffman learns more about Pitsenbargers courageous acts, he uncovers a high-level conspiracy behind the decades-long denial of the medal, prompting him to put his own career on the line to seek justice for the fallen airman. John Quaid Production [ edit] It took nearly 20 years to make the movie. Todd Robinson first learned about the William H. Pitsenbarger story while doing research for another movie in 1999. The story intrigued Robinson for several reasons, including Pitsenbarger's award of the Air Force Cross rather then the Medal of Honor. Robinson and Executive Producer Sidney Sherman pitched the film idea to more than 50 production companies but none of them were interested in making the movie. Finally Robinson decided to write the script without funding or a studio commitment. After finishing the script Robinson and Sherman continued to search for a studio. New Line Cinema won the deal in 2007, but not long after, New Line was sold to Warner Bros. and the project was canceled. Robinson and Sherman were again without a backer. Over the course of the next decade, they finally lined up funding and kicked off production in 2017. It was announced in May 2016 that Scott Eastwood and Ed Harris had been cast in the film, with Laurence Fishburne and Morgan Freeman in negotiations. By March 2017, Eastwood was no longer involved, and the film added Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer, William Hurt, Bradley Whitford, Michael Imperioli, Linus Roache, John Savage and Diane Ladd to its cast. Filming was set to begin between Atlanta and Costa Rica later that month. Grant Gustin and LisaGay Hamilton were cast as production commenced, with Amy Madigan and Peter Fonda joining in April. 10] 11] In August 2017, filming concluded in Atlanta and would move to Thailand, with Jeremy Irvine (replacing Gustin in his role) Ethan Russell, Ser'Darius Blain, Cody Walker, Julian Adams, Tommy Hatto and Zach Roerig cast in the film. 13] 14] 15] Roadside Attractions acquired the distribution rights to the film in September 2018, with an early 2019 release date eyed. It is scheduled to be released on January 24, 2020. Release [ edit] This film was released by Roadside Attractions on January 24, 2020. I could say to hell with Hollywood, but it's already there. DAYTON – The National Air Force Museum Theatre was packed with local community members who were eager to see the story of one hometown hero come to life on the big screen on Thursday night. The Air Force Museum Foundation hosted a special screening of “The Last Full Measure, ” a movie inspired by the story of Piqua native Airman 1st Class William H. Pitsenbarger, an Air Force pararescue specialist who saved the lives of members of the U. S. Armys 1st Infantry Division in one of the harshest battles of the Vietnam War. Offered the chance to escape on the last helicopter out of the combat zone, Pitsenbarger stayed behind to save and defend the lives of others. He first received the Air Force Cross before it was upgraded to a Congressional Medal of Honor 34 years after his death on that battlefield. He was also posthumously promoted to staff sergeant. Julian Adams, producer and co-star in the film, attended the screening on Thursday, saying he spent the last 20 years working on making this movie a reality. Adams, whose father was in the Air Force, has a passion for military films, having also produced and co-starred in “Phantom, ” a submarine thriller about a Russian submarine attempting to launch a nuclear missile at Pearl Harbor, set in 1968. “Hes a hero to me, ” Adams said. Adams noted the “hometown crowd, ” recognizing the Pitsenbarger family members and local Piqua residents in attendance, as well as honoring the Vietnam veterans and other veterans who were also at the screening. After graduating in 1962 from Piqua Central High School, Pitsenbarger joined the Air Force and later flew on nearly 300 combat rescue missions in Vietnam. “The Last Full Measure” follows the story of a group of Army and Air Force veterans who advocated for Pitsenbarger to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor over 30 years after his death. The film also portrays the events that happened during the battle near Cam My in Vietnam on April 11, 1966, where Pitsenbarger risked his life coordinating rescue efforts and was later killed after he stayed on the ground to continue performing medical duties, helping the infantrymen get ammunition, and even return fire when he could. The movie refers to this battle as Operation Abilene, and those scenes of the movie were shot in Thailand. While aspects of “The Last Full Measure” were dramatized for the purpose of streamlining the story for the movie, Adams noted that many of the lines of the veterans in the movie were direct quotes from the men from the Charlie Company (2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division) who advocated on behalf of Pitsenbarger to receive the Medal of Honor. One such quote was from F. David Peters of the Charlie Company, who said, “There was only one man on the ground that day that would have turned down a ride out of that hellhole — and that man was Pitsenbarger. ” “These were verbatim from talking to these guys, ” Adams said. A number of men from the Charlie Company were also incorporated into the movie, having cameos during the Medal of Honor ceremony at the end of the movie. One of the main characters of the movie, Scott Huffman, is a fictional Pentagon investigator who was played by Sebastian Stan of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier. ” Huffman was based on the real-life historian Parker Hayes, who helped document the accounts of the veterans who had served with Pitsenbarger and helped seek a formal reconsideration for Pitsenbarger to receive the Medal of Honor. Hayes passed away in August 2009 at the age of 36 before the movie was finished. “This film is exceptional, ” Chief Master Sgt. John Nolan Pitsenbarger of the U. Air Force, and fifth cousin to William H. Pitsenbarger, said. “I feel very close to William tonight. ” “This story is obviously very emotional, ” Adams said. Adams said the goal of the movie was to honor veterans in addition to telling Pitsenbargers story. While the movie was originally set to be released in October by Roadside Attractions, the release date has been pushed back to January in order to release it to a wider audience and hold more special screenings at military bases. Adams said the writer and director of the film, Todd Robinson, first introduced him to Pitsenbargers story after Pitsenbarger was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The men who were there to witness Pitsenbargers actions then became part of Adams motivation to pursue this movie for 20 years “This was a guy who didnt know these men and gave his life for them, ” Adams said. “He was a 21-year-old kid, and look at what he did. ” The cast includes a number of popular actors, such as Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Takoda, one of the veterans from the 1st Infantry Division, and Christopher Plummer, who portrays Pitsenbargers father, Frank Pitsenbarger. Ed Harris of “Westworld” portrays another veteran of the 1st Infantry Division saved by Pitsenbarger. While it was previously reported that William Pitsenbarger was going to be portrayed by Grant Gustin of “The Flash, ” Pitsenbarger actually ended up being played by Jeremy Irvine, who is known for movies like “War Horse” and “The Railway Man. ” When an audience member asked how the movie was able to get such popular actors to appear in the film, Adams said the actors connected with the human stories of the film. “The Last Full Measure” was also the last film Peter Fonda, who played Jimmy Burr, appeared in before he passed away in August. Adams also noted that while Fonda was against the Vietnam War at the time it was happening, he “was in tears about the arc” of the film and told Adams that he was “extremely proud” to be a part of the film. “It really is a story about every man and woman who serves, ” Adams said. Odie Henderson January 24, 2020 “The Last Full Measure” covers the 1999 battle to obtain the Medal of Honor for deceased Air Force Airman William Pitsenbarger. Killed in combat in one of the bloodiest missions of the Vietnam War, Pitsenbarger saved many lives but was awarded what his family and the men he saved and served with considered a lesser commendation. Were told that of the thousands of vets who have received the “MOH, ” as the characters here call it, only 18 of them hailed from the USAF. Pitsenbarger was not even supposed to be on the ground; he was in a chopper with his fellow airmen airlifting the wounded until the company below lost their medic. After assisting the wounded on the ground, Pitsenbarger defies an order to return to his aircraft, opting instead to seal his fate by engaging in combat to cover the remaining company men. Advertisement Writer/director Todd Robinson spins this tale of heroism with a lot of purple sentiment but surprisingly little of the jingoism expected from a film like this. Instead, “The Last Full Measure” spends much of its runtime examining postwar post-traumatic stress disorder and the survivors guilt that accompanies it. Running underneath this is a subtly rendered current of anger over the way veterans are treated once they come home. These ideas are presented by a cast of well-seasoned actors who help the film survive its occasionally clunky dialogue. In fact, one of the films bigger pleasures is listening to these thespians plow through their numerous monologues. Their performances are the film's saving grace. Sensing that his film might sink to more maudlin depths, Robinson presents an audience stand-in who represents the level of cynicism needed to balance out his story. Scott Huffman ( Sebastian Stan) is three months away from losing his current cushy government position due to the resignation of a higher-up. To keep him busy until then, his boss Carlton Stanton ( Bradley Whitford) assigns him the case brought up by Tulley ( William Hurt) the airman who sent Pitsenbarger into the jungle on the day he died. Stanton thinks Tulleys request will die on the vine—upgrades of medals were practically unheard of in the military—and even if it has staying power, the government will prolong any actions well past Huffmans tenure. Huffman treats the job with some disdain, but Tulley is not only persistent, hes wily. He earns an ally in Stantons boss by presenting his case at a mens room urinal. In one of the few scenes of humor, Tulley offers up a handshake while the other guy is quite obviously indisposed. Hurt is the first of several familiar faces “The Last Full Measure” pulls out like aces from a stacked deck. Christopher Plummer and Diane Ladd show up as Pitsenbargers parents Frank and Alice, and the men he saved are well played in their present-day incarnations by Ed Harris, John Savage, Samuel L. Jackson and Peter Fonda in one of his last roles. Each is given a flashback sequence and some of that aforementioned ripe dialogue. I began to tire of the flashbacks—theyre not bad, theyre just repetitive and would have been more effective presented as one major set-piece rather than interspersed throughout for unnecessary suspense—but my interest in those monologues never waned. In his few scenes, Fonda is especially good. His Jimmy Burr is a still-traumatized man who has slept during the day for 32 years due to his unshakeable fear of the night. His protective wife Donna ( Amy Madigan) sees right through Huffmans insincerity when he comes to interview Jimmy, warning him that this vet does not suffer fools gladly. Jimmy Burr is the type of character who can easily be overplayed, but Fonda finds the right note between stoicism and madness that is truly haunting. Burr punctuates every sentence he speaks to Huffman with “sir, ” and the way he says it hovers somewhere between an affectation and a threat. He even sells one of the movies pulpiest lines with gusto: After Huffman asks if Burrs gun is loaded, and receiving a demonstration of the affirmative, Burr yells “an unloaded gun is just a stick! ” Jackson is also very good here as Takoda. Like Fonda, he walks a fine line of menace without going over the top. At first antagonistic toward Huffman, Takoda gradually warms to him once he realizes that this may be the last chance for cancer-stricken Frank to see his son earn the MOH before he dies. Takoda and Frank share a scene of quiet power where the former, in a state of guilt-stricken grief over a specific battle incident, calls the latter and cant bring himself to speak. This is apparently a common occurrence. “Did he say anything? ” asks Alice. “He never does, ” replies Frank. Takoda and Tulley most strongly represent the films examination of survivors guilt and both are given scenes that reflect their anguish. You may have noticed that Ive said very little about William Pitsenbarger. “The Last Full Measure” misses the opportunity to flesh him out, to give us more insight into who he was. As played by Jeremy Irvine, he is certainly heroic and the actors good looks and affable manner serve as a form of cinematic character shorthand for someone for whom we should root. But hes mostly defined by the tales told by everyone else and as such remains a mystery held at arms length. This may have been Robinsons intention, to keep him a bit enigmatic as a form of respect, but I wish I could have spent more time hearing from Pitsenbarger directly. Without that, he feels like a ghost haunting his own story. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

Hmmm played this today at my concert, f yes. 1:37 I thought it was hugh jackman. A movie made for me, The Last Full Measure has a cast that I probably dreamt of. If youre a fan like me, you probably know when your favorite actor has movies coming. Ive known about The Last Full Measure for quite some time, and for a while, it seemed as if wed never see this movie. Lo and behold, at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, it was announced that Roadside Attractions (a sister company to Lionsgate) had purchased the distributing rights to the film. Following the true story of William Pitsenbarger, who is played by Jeremy Irvine, the film is set around Pitsenbargers comrade in arms (William Hurt) and father (Christopher Plummer) trying to get him the Congressional Medal of Honor. With the help of investigator Scott Huffman (Sebastian Stan) the two want to honor William in the way they see fit. Ive been following the movies journey to the screen not just because Im a fan of Sebastian Stan, but rather because this movie has an insane cast overall. From William Hurt (who many know from The Big Chill and who plays General Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) to Christopher Plummer (yes, Captain Von Trapp is in this movie, too) to Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris, and Grant Gustin, its filled with dream actors. No really, this cast list is so insane that I still think Ive been dreaming and it isnt really being made. With heavy hitters, new loves, and a story that is going to inspire many, The Last Full Measure promises to be an amazing film. Also, Sebastian Stan wears a lot of polos in this movie and I dont need that in my life but here we are. When asked about the purchase, Roadsides Howard Cohen and Eric dArbeloff said, “Todd Robinsons riveting drama chronicles one mans sacrifice and valor on the battlefield, and we believe it also highlights an aspect of American patriotism overdue for recognition. Everyone should know about William Pitsenbargers bravery and life, and its a privilege to bring this film to theaters where it should be seen. ” Todd Robinson also wrote the script, as well as directed the film. Its clearly a passion project, telling this story of a wonderful man who dedicated his life to saving those soldiers alongside him in the Vietnam war and it will be a wonderful film to see. Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer was born in Toronto, Ontario. He is the only child of Isabella Mary (Abbott) a secretary to the Dean of Sciences at McGill University, and John Orme Plummer, who sold securities and stocks. He is a great-grandson of John Abbott, who was Canada's third Prime Minister (from 1891 to 1892) and a great-great-great-grandson of Anglican clergyman John Bethune. He has Scottish, English, and Anglo-Irish ancestry. Plummer was raised in Senneville, Quebec, by Montreal. Until the 2009 Academy Awards were announced, it could be said about Plummer that he was the finest actor of the post-World War II period to fail to get an Academy Award. In that, he was following in the footsteps of the late great John Barrymore, whom Plummer so memorably portrayed on Broadway in a one-man show that brought him his second Tony Award. In 2010, Plummer finally got an Oscar nod for his portrayal of another legend, Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station (2009. Two years later, the first paragraph of his obituary was written when the 82-year-old Plummer became the oldest person in Academy history to win an Oscar. He won for playing a senior citizen who comes out as gay after the death of his wife in the movie Beginners (2010. As he clutched his statuette, the debonaire thespian addressed it thusly: You're only two years older than me darling, where have you been all of my life? Plummer then told the audience that at birth, I was already rehearsing my Academy acceptance speech, but it was so long ago mercifully for you I've forgotten it. " The Academy Award was a long time in coming and richly deserved. Aside from the youngest member of the Barrymore siblings (which counted Oscar-winners Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore in their number) Christopher Plummer is the premier Shakespearean actor to come out of North America in the 20th century. He was particularly memorable as Hamlet, Iago and Lear, though his Macbeth opposite Glenda Jackson was. and this was no surprise to him due to the famous curse attached to the "Scottish Play. a failure. Plummer also has given many fine portrayals on film, particularly as he grew older and settled down into a comfortable marriage with his third wife Elaine. He thanked her from the stage during the 2012 Oscar telecast, quipping that she "deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for coming to my rescue every day of my life. " Like another great stage actor, Richard Burton, the younger Plummer failed to connect with the screen in a way that would make him a star. Dynamic on stage, the charisma failed to transfer through the lens onto celluloid. Burton's early film career, when he was a contract player at 20th Century-Fox, failed to ignite despite his garnering two Oscar nominations early on.
